On Tuesday, June 23, CPMC held another meeting with neighbors and community members to discuss the new St. Luke's hospital building. It was the first time that many had a chance to see the latest design plans for the hospital and how it fits in with the neighborhood. The response was encouraging. Many called it a good step forward, but others said more changes need to be made.

John Golenski, Blue Ribbon Panel facilitator, gave an overview of the Panel's work and outreach. He was followed by the Rev. Rt. Marc Andrus, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California and Blue Ribbon Panel vice-chair, who spoke about the Panel's conclusions and their rationale for the provision that St. Luke's provide continuous service during the construction years. CPMC is planning the facility based on these recommendations.

Dionne Miller (Vice President, Clinical Services and Chief Administrative Officer, St. Luke's Campus) and Geoffrey Nelson (Director, Enterprise Development) addressed questions about the new hospital's size, layout, noise, and parking. They also stressed that the plan is far from complete and that the community has an important role to play in helping us refine the design of the campus even further.

Many of the concerns from neighbors centered on the size of the building, the shadow it might cast on their homes, the location of the loading docks, dirt/noise and general disruption to the neighborhood during construction, parking during and after construction, and the importance of making the campus community focused. Some attendees wanted to see the hospital be larger. Some wanted to see it smaller and less disruptive. There were also calls for more community outreach to increase awareness of our plans and notify interested parties of future meetings.

CPMC is committed to working with our neighbors and community to develop a high-quality campus that will not just be a medical home to the people South of Market but will also help revitalize the neighborhood and have a strong 'green' element, making it as environmentally friendly as possible. The meeting was part of the ongoing dialogue about St. Luke's, and we look forward to comments, ideas and suggestions on how to improve the design and make it an integral part of the community.
