Critical factor in human CMV infection identified

Researchers at CPMC have identified a protein, platelet-derived growth factor-alpha receptor that causes the human cytomegalovirus (CMV) to cause life-threatening infections. 40,000 babies are born with this type of herpes virus each year. This finding could be beneficial in understanding how CMV gets into a patient’s cell and how to better treat or even prevent the infection. CMV has been found in several forms of cancer and promotes tumor growth; researchers believe that identifying this protein can lead to developing more ways to treat CMV and certain cancers.
